We have an immediate need for a Design Engineer with experience developing and implementing (release to manufacturing) new products for Sportworks Transit Rack line-of-business.

Sportworks Northwest is an industry leading manufacturer of transportation and bicycle infrastructure components.  Our bike racks for buses enjoy wide acceptance and market share.  We also manufacture complex assemblies for contract customers in the outdoor products arena.  We have an immediate need for an mid-level staff member who has aptitude for designing and implementing into manufacturing new product designs for our bicycle parking and transit rack customers.  This position is expected to evolve into a senior level position with independent product development and project management responsibility, having primary responsible for product design in one or more of our product families.  The position will also entail interface with key customers, and also may include technical product representation at trade shows.

Requirements:
• Fluent computer user with 3D CAD experience, preferably Autodesk Inventor.
• Good hands-on mechanical aptitude.
• Good spatial geometry or 3D geometry visualization.
• Experience with fabricated metal and plastic products.
• Experience with product development, testing and releasing to manufacturing.
• BS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Some tool design and process development experience.
• Experience with welded assemblies
• Experience with bent tubing products
• Experience with FEA and conventional Stress Analysis a plus
• Experience with QFD, DFMEA and other design methods
• Creativity with mechanism and linkage design desired

Duties and Responsibilities

Research
• Participate in Customer survey and data collection to create customer requirements specification
• Participate in brainstorming of new product requirements to satisfy customer needs
• Provide research and testing of product materials and designs to recommend alternatives that would improve the quality and/or cost efficiency of current products.
• Document findings, cost analysis, and recommendations for presentation to company and/or customer management.

Development
• Produce 3D models using Inventor.
• Produce mechanical drawings.
• Design prototypes, coordinate fabrication, testing and analysis
• Participate in sourcing purchased parts and assemblies and evaluate supplier capabilities.
• Develop and manage product test plans and execution of testing.

Release to Manufacturing
• Finalize designs and drawings using Geometric Dimensioning, create P/N’s, BOM structure and work instructions in Intuitive ERP System
• Finalize Manufacturing and Purchasing Drawings.
• Design and coordinate fabrication of manufacturing tooling
• Coordinate First Articles for new tooling and process and provide production training.

Project Management
• Perform on-going production performance reviews and make improvements when appropriate.
• Be the key contact for internal and external customers related to product installation, performance or safety issues.
• Coordinate product improvements as necessary.
