In the early 1990's, Sportworks came onto the scene and responded to a RFP issued by King County's Metro bus system for the design and fabrication of a bike rack for buses. As they say, the rest is history and these racks now transport over 2 million bikes a month across the globe. We saw an opportunity early on to provide a benefit to cyclists and have been advancing those products and ideas ever since. As markets have opened up and cities that never would have considered bike racks on buses 10 years ago begin to purchase these en masse, we are challenged to look at the market with our eyes of innovation and design and deliver other cyclist friendly products.
A company of people passionate about cycling and advancing those opportunities for all tends to look at the market with a different set of eyes that a typical manufacturer. You begin to ask questions and not be satisfied with the typical answers. You go beyond simply asking questions however, and work to engineer a product that you hope will revolutionize the industry.
From all of that, rises new products that you are excited to tell the market about. Products that provide highly organized bike parking while providing a much improved aesthetic from the typical bike rack, products that provide a benefit to cyclists like a No-Scratch® rack, or using stainless steel as a standard rather than an exception. As a friend used to say, "It's not rocket surgery!", but there is a level of intentionality inherent in our products that seems to be a refreshing welcome to both the market and industry. While they have stated that they wish they would have come up with the idea themselves, many other manufacturers have expressed their appreciation for our products and the lengths that we go to in order to consider the needs of the cyclist. In fact, some industry influencers have gone so far as to say that these products will revolutionize the market.
So what does all of this mean? It means that we are grateful for the opportunity to launch and develop even more products that are not simply replicas of an existing product, but a product that addresses the shortcomings of every other product on the market. It means that we are committed to thoughtful products. It also means that we are committed to the cyclist, and therefore purposeful to not design or sell products like the wave rack and the comb/wheelbender/grid rack. Sound crazy? Perhaps, but we are strongly devoted to what we do.
