Product Design and Development Engineer

Full-time, On-site in Woodinville, WA

Sportworks is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and self-directed Product Design and Development Engineer who has an aptitude for designing products and implementing them into the manufacturing process. This role has growth potential with an expectation for a future senior-level position with independent responsibility and primary responsibility for product design in one or more of our product families. Regular communication with customers is required as well as periodic technical product representation at trade shows.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop new product designs for commercial applications
  • Design manufacturing tooling for low to medium volume applications
  • Conduct product economic analyses to determine make or buy decisions
  • Strong customer service skills and a great communicator to interact professionally with both internal and external customers
  • Serve as a key contact for internal and external customers regarding product installation, performance, or safety issues
  • Participate in customer survey and data collection to determine customer requirements
  • Anticipate industry trends and growing/changing needs of our customers to capitalize on new product development and innovation
  • Provide research and testing to optimize plans and recommendations of continuous product improvements
  • Produce 3D models, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation
  • Responsible for the product design process from start to finish; product testing
  • Cross departmental collaboration to ensure efficient sourcing of purchased parts and assemblies and evaluation of supplier capabilities
  • Draft designs and drawings using geometric dimensioning, create part numbers, BOM structure and work instructions in ERP system
  • Develop manufacturing and purchasing drawings
  • Design and coordinate fabrication of manufacturing tooling
  • Create first articles for new tooling processes and provide production training
  • Perform on-going production performance reviews and make improvements when appropriate



Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficient with 3D CAD, preferably Autodesk Inventor
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Exceptional spatial geometry or 3D geometry visualization
  • Experience with fabricated metal and plastic products
  • Experience with product development life cycles, testing and the process to release products to manufacturing
  • Tool design and process development experience preferred
  • Experience with welded assemblies and bent tubing products
  • Experience with FEA and conventional stress analysis a plus
  • Experience with QFD, DFMEA and other design methods
  • Creativity with mechanism and linkage design is desired



Required Education and Experience:

  • BS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • CAD and engineering technical documentation and management
  • Experience with product development life cycles
  • Experience with fabricated metal and plastic products
