Today, on Earth Day, the League of American Bicyclists announced their Bicycle Friendly Business awards. According to the League, "Bicycle Friendly Businesses encourage a more bicycle-friendly atmosphere for employees and customers alike. BFBs attract and retain energized, alert and productive employees, while decreasing healthcare costs."
The League awarded 161 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Businesses in 31 states and Washington, D.C. with their announcement. "The program has grown to include more than 950 visionary local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies from across the country that are changing the script on what it means to provide a top-notch experience and atmosphere for employees and customers alike."
Sportworks joins Starbucks, from the Seattle area earning a Silver-level award. Also out of Seattle, Seattle Children's Hospital received a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Business award.
"On this Earth Day, the League recognizes and applauds the efforts of these business leaders across the country," said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. "Their leadership is setting a precedent in their communities, states and the nation for what it means to practice what you preach. They are forging a better future for us all by investing in a more sustainable future for the country and a healthier future for their employees."
This award means a great deal to us. Many Sportworks employees ride to work regularly even through the rainy Seattle winter. We are fortunate to have bicycle parking racks, a clothes drying area and showers to accommodate our commuting employees and ORCA transit cards for those who prefer the multi-modal commute. Last year, during bike to work month in May, one of our commuting teams logged nearly 3000 miles!
Our bicycle friendly culture stems from the top down. The owner of the company rides regularly and has ridden the grueling RAMROD (Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day) which entails 10,000 feet of climbing in 168 miles! For a company that makes bicycle parts and employees who are passionate about the cause, it is a thrill to be named to the League's Bicycle Friendly Business list.
Sportworks began as a bicycle accessory manufacturer in the early 90's transitioning to creating our own bicycle related product, the Bike-Rack-for-Buses, which can now be found on tens of thousands of buses across the country. Our line of Bike Parking racks joins the Bike-Rack-for-Buses in creating products aimed at creating better bicycle infrastructure for all communities.
